John (Jack) L. Layman was born December 23, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, with a Bachelor of Business Administration, later earning a Master of Divinity from Columbia International University, a Master of Education Administration from Western Carolina University, and a PhD in Philosophy of Education from the University of South Carolina.

Jack encountered Jesus during his freshman year (two days before his future wife, Liz, asked him for their first date). His relationship with his Lord deepened rapidly as he began to love and serve Christ. In 1955, Jack and Liz, now married, entered the Graduate School of Missions at Columbia Bible College (now CIU). A year later, he began teaching at Ben Lippen School in Asheville, NC, before returning to CBC to finish his studies.

In 1961, Jack and Liz, with two small daughters, went to Kenya, East Africa, to work among Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim immigrants in neighborhood evangelism, running a library, Good News Clubs and camps, and an adult Bible study. After ten years in Kenya, now with four daughters, Jack was again called to Ben Lippen School – as headmaster. He also taught Senior Bible and Social Studies, while Liz taught French and began foster care. Two more daughters and two sons were adopted.

Returning to CIU in 1983, Jack taught a variety of courses, notably Hermeneutics, Progress of Redemption, and Culture and Civilization (Western Man). His office was always open to students needing help or a friendly chat.

Jack was involved for many years with the Association of Christian Schools International, speaking at conferences in the USA and abroad.

On July 12, 2010, Jack was presented with the Kingdom Impact Honor by the CIU Alumni Association.

He retired at age 78. His goal has always been to “go” wherever Christ sends him and to “make disciples” for his Lord, whether through evangelism, teaching, leadership or giving encouragement to anyone who comes his way.

Dr. Layman passed away in 2021.
