Dr. B. Hathaway (Hap) Struthers was born of missionary parents to Venezuela. His father was from Scotland, while his mother was Venezuelan.  He has a BA and MA in Bible, an MS in Education (from ODU) and a Ph.D. in Old Testament and Old Testament Languages.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1955 where he ministered as a chaplain for 21 years in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. He served in bases in the United States, Japan, Guam and Vietnam with Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel. He served with the Marines in Vietnam for over a year.

In 1976, after retiring from the Navy, Hap went to Columbia International University to serve on the faculty. During his 18 years at Columbia in addition to teaching, he served as Dean of Off-Campus Students, as the Dean of the Ministry Development Division for both the Bible College and the Seminary, and as the Director of Church Planting for the Seminary. In 1994, Hap retired from CIU and moved to Norfolk, VA, where he and Dr. Kennard Brackney co-founded a new educational ministry, Faith Bible College which is now fully accredited by ABHE. He served as President from 1995–2000 and from 2010–2017 and continues to teach at the college.

He is a member of Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, and is on the Board of Directors of the Source of Light Ministries International, Madison, Georgia. He also serves on the board of Global Friendship Ministries which ministers with international students in the Hampton Roads area. For over fifteen years he served on the state board for the South Carolina Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Through the years he has traveled widely speaking and teaching in over thirty-five countries. He served on the translation Committee for the Berkley Version of the Bible (Modern Language Bible) and has written several courses for Source of Light Ministries, the latest targeting younger people entitled, Winning the Race of Life. He is married to Beverly; they have four children and seven grandchildren.
